Mashable reports that Reddit user SelfProdigy’s declaration that December 29 should be Dump GoDaddy Day is gaining momentum across the online community. The suggestion is based on frustration with GoDaddy’s initial support of the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which is making its way through Congress.
The proposed provisions of the anti-piracy SOPA are quite complicated but are represented well in a graphic created by some groups who oppose the bill, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
Although GoDaddy has since stated that it is withdrawing its support for SOPA, no official move with Congress has been made — and that has made quite a few people annoyed with the Internet domain registrar. Indeed, Mashable reports that about 20,000 accounts have already left GoDaddy following the SOPA scandal, while Venture Beat puts the estimate at around 37,000.
Moreover, just a few days ago, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced that Wikia and Wikipedia domains would be transferred away from GoDaddy; another huge loss for GoDaddy is The Cheezburger Network, which operates several popular sites including I Can Haz Cheezburger, the FAIL blog, Engrish Funny, and Totally Looks Like.
What do you think of Dump GoDaddy Day? Or SOPA?
