5 Awesome Sci-Fi Inventions for National Inventors Month

no comments yet

Inventions don’t have to be real to be cool. In honor of National Inventors Month, we’ve collected five of the coolest fictional inventions—the ones we most wish were real.

Lightsaber – Star Wars

No list of sci-fi or movie inventions is complete without the lightsaber. This Jedi weapon features a blade of energy that can effortlessly slice through almost anything. Even if you’re not battling the Empire, how much cooler would everyday chores be if you were wielding a lightsaber instead of standard household tools? The kids would fight over whose turn it is to trim the hedges. And making dinner would be non-stop excitement if every chop of a tomato yielded a “shrruumm.”

Proton Pack – Ghostbusters

The “unlicensed nuclear accelerators” used for busting ghosts are an undisputed favorite when it comes to personal nuclear devices. Ghosts or not, you can’t help but feel powerful with a proton gun in your hand.

Hitchhiker’s Guide – Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

The Guide is infamously riddled with errors and misinformation, but what can you expect of something with the lofty goal of providing comprehensive knowledge of everything in a galaxy? In addition to being the “standard repository for all knowledge and wisdom,” The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is also crowdsourced—like a pocket-sized Wikipedia with added snark.

Transporter – Star Trek

Wouldn’t vacations be more fun if you could skip the many-hours-in-a-small-space part? No more never-ending car rides with rambunctious kids or middle seats on 5-hour flights with the transporter. Feel like escaping to a tropical paradise? No problem. Beam yourself right onto the beach in Maui for the weekend.

It’s what makes time travel possible. Enough said.
